Gold vermeil is not plating. It is 18k gold laid three and a half microns thick over solid recycled sterling silver — more than the standard requires, because the standard was written for jewellery that was not meant to last.

Yes, on both counts that matter. Vermeil requires a solid sterling silver base where plating is usually over brass or steel, and it requires a minimum gold thickness where plating has none.

Put it on last and take it off first. Perfume, sunscreen, chlorine and cleaning products are what wear gold, not ordinary daily use.
Wipe it with a dry cloth after wearing and keep it out of a damp bathroom. Treated that way, vermeil holds its colour for years.
